Dhaka, Nov 07 (V7N) — A Dhaka court has granted a six-day remand for Amir Hossain Amu, senior Awami League advisor and former minister, in connection with the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud during the anti-discrimination student movement in the New Market area.

Judge Imran Ahmed of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court approved the remand on Thursday after Police Inspector Jahangir Arif, the investigation officer, requested a 10-day remand to ensure a thorough investigation. Amu was taken into custody by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) on Wednesday from Dhanmondi. Reportedly, Amu is facing 15 cases, including charges of murder.

The murder of Abdul Wadud took place on July 19 at 5 PM in front of New Market's Gate No. 1. Following this incident, a murder case was filed implicating 130 individuals, among them former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

Amid the shifting political landscape on August 5, Amu’s residence in Jhalakathi was set ablaze by protesters. Authorities later seized approximately 50 million taka in local and foreign currencies from his residence. Subsequently, on August 18, Amu’s bank accounts, along with those of his children and associated businesses, were frozen.

Amir Hossain Amu, a former MP from the Jhalakathi-2 constituency, is also the current coordinator and spokesperson for the Awami League-led 14-party grand alliance.
