Dhaka, Nov 25 (V7N) — The state has filed an appeal with the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division challenging the High Court's recent order to ban the operation of battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka city. The appeal was submitted on Monday to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division, with a hearing expected soon.

The High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Mahmudur Razi issued the ban on Tuesday after hearing a writ petition filed by the Greater Dhaka City Corporation Rickshaw Owner Oikyajot. The court’s decision aims to address safety, environmental, and regulatory concerns surrounding battery-powered rickshaws in the capital.

In response, motor rickshaw drivers have launched protests opposing the High Court's directive. Demonstrations have caused heightened tension in the area, prompting authorities to deploy additional police personnel around the High Court premises to ensure security.

The case has sparked significant debate, with stakeholders divided over the impact of the ban. While some argue that it addresses unregulated traffic and environmental risks, others point out the livelihood challenges it poses to drivers relying on these vehicles for their income.

A decision from the Chamber Court is now awaited, which could determine the future of battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka city.
