Dhaka, May 14 (V7N) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has concluded the hearing on the appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami seeking restoration of its registration as a political party. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, announced that the verdict will be delivered on June 1.
The hearing took place on Wednesday, where Senior Advocate Ehsan A Siddique and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented the appeal on behalf of Jamaat.
The appeal challenges a High Court verdict that had earlier declared Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration with the Election Commission illegal.
On May 7, the same bench scheduled today’s hearing after Advocate Shishir Monir filed an application seeking an urgent hearing on the matter. The appeal hearing originally began on March 12, but had seen no further proceedings until now.
Notably, on October 22 last year, the Appellate Division revived the appeal, which had previously been dismissed. That decision cleared the legal path for Jamaat-e-Islami to contest for reinstatement of its registration and reclaim its electoral symbol, the scales.
The final judgment on June 1 is expected to have significant political implications ahead of any future electoral processes.
