The brother of the deceased has lodged a case concerning the demise of Atomang Marma, the UP Chairman who sustained severe injuries in the shooting carried out by regional party militants in Baratholi Union under Bilaichhari Upazila of Rangamati. 
 
Mohammad Aktar Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bilaichhari police station, confirmed the filing of the case.
 
He stated that on Friday, May 31, in the evening, the elder brother of the deceased chairman, Kachimong Marma (61), registered a murder case under sections 302/34 as the plaintiff at Bilaichhari police station, with case number 01. However, for the purpose of investigation, the names and identities of the accused individuals mentioned in the statement cannot be divulged. Additionally, he mentioned that the body has been handed over to the family after undergoing a post-mortem examination at Chittagong's Panchlaish police station.
 
Armed militants belonging to the regional party shot Atomong Marma, the chairman of Durgum Baratholi UP in Bilaichhari upazila, following the upazila elections on May 21 last.
 
Coincidentally, during the second phase of the 6th Upazila Parishad General Election, Chairman Atomong Marma of Baratholi Union under Bilaichhari Upazila was fatally shot by militants at around 11:15 pm while he was residing at his relative's house in Baratholi Marma Para. Subsequently, local residents rescued him and transported him to Ruma Upazila Health Complex.
 
He was then transferred to Bandarban District Sadar Hospital for further treatment, and later to Chittagong Medical. He passed away in the ICU at approximately 11:30 on Thursday night, after being under treatment for about 9 days.
 
Previously, on March 18, 2019, following the fifth upazila council election, Upazila Awami League president Suresh Kanti Tanchangya was also shot dead by hill militants on the next day, March 19. Consequently, two leaders were ruthlessly killed by militants in the upazila during the election period.
