Rangamati, Nov 01 (V7N)- A retired army officer, Ruichau Marma (75), also known as Bobby’s father, has reportedly been abducted from Kawkhali, Rangamati. Sources indicate that an armed group abducted him on Tuesday, October 29, from the Bardolu area in Kalmapati Union. Although the incident happened on Tuesday, it only came to light on Friday afternoon.

Local sources report that the area where the abduction took place is controlled by the anti-peace accord organization, UPDF. Many locals believe UPDF may have orchestrated the abduction.

Kawkhali Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Saifur Rahman Sohag, mentioned he learned about the incident through hearsay but could not confirm any details about the abductors or their motives. He also added that no complaint has been filed by the family. Previously, a young man had been shot in the same area, causing rising fears among residents. UPDF, however, denied any involvement in this incident.

According to other sources, a group of 10-12 individuals, led by UPDF’s suspected extortionist Rimonsu, also known as Twikka Marama, and post manager Chaisiu, or Avi Marma, abducted Ruichau Marma from his home on October 29. Witnesses stated that the abductors took him towards the remote Boroichhari area. The area is known to be a UPDF stronghold, with the group maintaining long-term dominance there. Due to fear, witnesses had remained silent until now.

The reason behind this elderly man’s abduction remains unclear, with no party confirming a motive. His family has also confirmed the abduction. Ruichau Marma’s wife stated that he is in good health and may be released soon, although she avoided commenting on ransom demands.

Kalmapati Union Parishad Chairman, Kajai Marma, said he received information suggesting that the abductee may be released shortly, though he could not clarify why the abduction took place.

Ruichau Marma, a well-known figure in the area, has good relations with both indigenous and Bengali communities. An anonymous local resident from Bardolu noted that, as a retired army officer, Ruichau Marma opposed ongoing militant activities in the hill tracts, which may have led to his abduction.

When contacted, UPDF leader Amiya Chakma denied any UPDF involvement in the abduction, alleging that certain parties were spreading misinformation in their name. He urged authorities to investigate and uncover the truth.

Notably, on October 19, a young man named Angthwai Ching Marma was shot in the same area, which has heightened fear among locals.
