Rangamati, Nov 20 (V7N) – A memorandum demanding representation from the four underrepresented upazilas of Kaukhali, Jurachhari, Barkal, and Rajasthali in the reconstituted Rangamati Hill District Council was submitted to District Commissioner Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan on Wednesday afternoon.
The memorandum, addressed to the chief advisor of the interim government, highlighted grievances over the exclusion of these upazilas in the 15-member council, despite representation being allocated to six other upazilas. The petitioners argued that this exclusion violates established norms and leaves the residents of these regions marginalized and neglected.
Prominent figures presenting the memorandum included Advocate Rajeev Chakma, General Secretary of the Rangamati District Lawyers Association, development worker Jasim Uddin, and locals such as Pulin Bihari Chakma of Barkal, Md. Mia of Kaukhali, and Ranjit Tanchangya of Rajasthali.
The memorandum accused the reconstitution process of being marked by "arbitrariness, partiality, and nepotism," and expressed concern over the exclusion of representatives from remote and disadvantaged upazilas. The petitioners warned that such decisions could undermine peace and harmony in the region.
Additionally, allegations were raised against 13 council members, excluding Chairman Kajal Talukder and member Debprasad Dewan. The memorandum claimed some members were beneficiaries of the previous Awami League government, party affiliates, or individuals with questionable backgrounds, including murder accusations.
The Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts recently formed the new interim council, which has faced objections since its announcement. On the day the chairman and members assumed office, student protests erupted at the council's main gate, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction with the council's composition.
Local leaders and residents are calling for a fair and inclusive reorganization that ensures representation for all upazilas to uphold peace, equality, and development in the region.
