Jhenaidah, Dec 14 (V7N)- Two violent clashes erupted in Satgachhi village of Shailkupa upazila, Jhenaidah, following a controversial fatwa issued by a muezzin. The second clash, occurring on Saturday from morning to noon, led to the vandalism and burning of at least 30 houses and left at least 10 people injured.

Triggered by Fatwa on Music

The conflict began on Friday when music was played during a circumcision ceremony at Kashem Molla's house. During the Friday prayers, the muezzin and general secretary of the village mosque committee, Imam Hakim Molla, issued a fatwa declaring music and songs "haram." This declaration led to an argument with Kashem Molla, which escalated into a physical fight between the two groups inside the mosque.

Later that afternoon, the groups clashed again using local weapons, resulting in vandalism and injuries to at least 10 people, including a woman.

Saturday’s Violent Escalation

The violence reignited on Saturday morning as tensions between the two groups boiled over. According to Shailkupa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masum Khan, the clash escalated, with 30 houses being vandalized and one set on fire. The fire was later brought under control by the fire service. At least 10 people sustained injuries during the incident.

Law Enforcement Response

Police and military personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain order. Despite efforts to stabilize the situation, tensions remain high.

Officer-in-Charge Masum Khan stated, “We are working with the police and the army to control the situation. Investigations are ongoing, and additional measures are being taken to prevent further violence.”

Community Reactions

Local residents expressed concern over the unrest, with many condemning the use of violence to settle disputes. The incident has sparked discussions about the impact of religious decrees and the need for peaceful conflict resolution within the community.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
