Khulna, Jan 11, 2025 (V7N) – The MV Melina, a Russian flag-carrier ship, has successfully arrived at Mongla sea port with essential goods for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP). The vessel anchored at jetty No. 9 on Friday and departed after unloading the machinery.
Muhammad Makruzzaman, Deputy Director of the Mongla Port Authority (MPA), confirmed that the imported goods will be transported to the RNPP by road. He noted that machinery and equipment for the RNPP have consistently been imported through Mongla port, and this shipment included significant general machinery.
Makruzzaman highlighted an increase in the arrival of foreign commercial ships at the port since the start of the year. Currently, 18 commercial vessels are anchored, carrying various goods including coal, gypsum, and containers. In the first six months of the 2024-25 fiscal year, 413 commercial ships have docked at Mongla, handling 10,386 TEUs of containers and importing 5,637 vehicles via 10 vehicle-carrying ships.
The port has facilitated the import and export of 52,84,471 tonnes of goods, generating Taka 210 crore in revenue. To ensure safe navigation for foreign vessels, 69 navigation buoys have been installed in the sea channels. The port is equipped to accommodate 47 ships simultaneously at its jetty, mooring buoys, and anchorage, along with various facilities to support importers and exporters.
