Rajshahi, Jan 14 (V7N) - The Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) is facing severe political pressure to cancel the recent recruitment of approximately 4,500 deep tube well operators. Despite publishing the final list of 16,789 operators, political leaders have reportedly influenced the irrigation department to accept backdated applications from their affiliates. Sources confirm that a new recruitment committee will soon be formed to replace the original appointees with politically backed candidates, causing frustration and disarray among BMDA officials and the selected candidates.

Allegations have surfaced that political leaders are engaging in corrupt practices by demanding 3 to 5 lakh taka for operator positions. High-ranking politicians have submitted bulk recommendations, with some proposing 200–250 candidates, creating immense pressure on BMDA officials. As a result, BMDA has delayed issuing appointment letters, leaving qualified candidates in uncertainty.

BMDA, which manages 16,789 deep tube wells across 16 northern districts, initially received 23,750 applications, shortlisted candidates through interviews, and published the final list on December 30. However, political protests erupted in areas like Rajshahi, Naogaon, and Chapainawabganj, demanding that party supporters be prioritized. Consequently, BMDA offices have been paralyzed, and plans are underway to appoint 4,500 politically recommended individuals without interviews. This growing political interference has raised concerns about fairness and the future of irrigation services in the region.
