Tangail, Jan 26 (V7N) - Allegations of corruption and irregularities have been leveled against Ziaul Karim Mohammad Tarek, the Conservation and Movement Officer of Biswas Betka LSD in Tangail district. Workers and employees of the food warehouse have filed complaints against him in various departments.
Recently, Tarek was caught signing 105 V-invoices in advance, violating regulations. Despite being absent from January 9 to January 13, he approved these invoices beforehand. Following an investigation, Regional Food Controller Suraiya Khatun issued a show cause notice against him on Thursday, demanding a detailed explanation within three working days.
This is not the first time Tarek has faced scrutiny. In 2014, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation into his alleged acquisition of wealth beyond known sources of income. However, the inquiry was dismissed in 2017 following a letter from the then ACC Secretary stating the allegations were unfounded. Tarek, then the Food Controller of Anwara Upazila in Chittagong, later served as Assistant Food Controller in the Department of Movement and Preservation in Chittagong.
In 2020, further allegations arose against him for acquiring unexplained wealth and violating service rules through international travel. Former Food Department Director General Sarwar Mahmud filed a departmental case against him on December 29, 2020. Despite these accusations, Tarek has reportedly used his political connections to avoid consequences.
Documents show that in his 2018-19 income tax return, Tarek declared assets worth 15.4 lakh taka. Additionally, he owns land in Cox’s Bazar and Chakaria under BS Khatian numbers 10384 and 3201. His elder brother, Rezaul Karim Selim, President of the Lakshyachar Union Awami League, was also implicated in selling subsidized rice on the black market, leading to the suspension of his license for Bhai Bhai Traders.
Tarek, however, denies all allegations, claiming he is a victim of conspiracy.
Tangail District Food Controller Mohammad Tanvir Hossain confirmed receiving the show cause notice issued by Regional Food Controller Suraiya Khatun and is aware of the matter.
