Dhaka, Feb 24, (V7N) – Train services between Dhaka and North Bengal have been suspended since Monday morning as students of Gazipur Digital University blocked railway tracks, demanding that their institution be renamed ‘Bangladesh Digital University’.

The blockade on the Dhaka-Gazipur rail route has left Burimari Express and Ekota Express trains stranded at Mouchak and Joydebpur stations, while Banalata Express and Dhaka Commuter trains remain stuck at Mohera and Mirzapur stations.

Students first gathered outside the university’s administrative building before moving to Hi-Tech Railway Station to stage their demonstration, which was still ongoing as of 12:20 PM.

The university was originally named Bangabandhu Digital University (BDU) but was rebranded Gazipur Digital University following last year’s political transition. Students, however, have rejected the new name, insisting that it be changed to Bangladesh Digital University to reflect a national identity.

This is not the first time students have voiced their opposition. Two days ago, they held demonstrations and formed a human chain, even blocking the Dhaka-Tangail Highway to push for their demands.

Joydebpur Junction Station Master Abul Khayer Chowdhury confirmed that train services were halted due to the blockade, with railway police and law enforcement officials working to resolve the situation.

As the standoff continues, authorities face mounting pressure to address student grievances while minimizing further disruptions to national rail services.
