Mongla, Feb 25 (V7N) – A written complaint has been filed with the Navy contingent in Mongla over an extortion demand of Tk 1 lakh from a Bangladeshi expatriate in the United States.
According to the complaint, Mohammad Bayezid Sheikh, a resident of Gwalermath in Mithakhali Union of Mongla and an expatriate in the U.S., has been harassed in various ways by Mohammad Zubair Hossain and Abu Hasan, representatives of the Mongla Citizens' Committee. In response to their demands, Bayezid had given them 10 thousand taka. However, Zubair and Abu Hasan continued to demand the remaining 90 thousand taka. They reportedly threatened Bayezid with physical violence and intimidation, saying they would frame him by sending him to the police if he did not pay.
Having received no resolution from local political leaders, Bayezid filed a written complaint on Monday with the Navy contingent in Mongla. In his complaint, he also stated that the police were complicit in the harassment, as they failed to take any action after being informed of the extortion.
In addition, there are multiple allegations against Zubair and Abu Hasan. They are accused of demanding Tk 10 lakh from the Chairman of Burirdanga Union, Uday Shankar Biswas, and also from Abu Taher Howlader’s son, Sabuj Howlader, in exchange for preventing a house demolition. The phone records of these extortion demands have gone viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion and criticism.
Zubair and Hasan have denied the allegations, claiming that a faction is attempting to defame their organization. They have condemned the extortion accusations and demanded proof of their alleged wrongdoing, stating that they would accept any corrective measures if the allegations were proven true.
