Sylhet, Mar 17 (V7N)– A driver at the Sylhet Government Technical Training Center (TTC) is facing serious allegations of corruption and abuse of power, having reportedly amassed significant wealth during his 20-year tenure.
Kazi Md. Billal Hossain, the driver in question, is accused of leveraging his position to build a substantial fortune, including a multi-million taka house in South Surma, ownership of 10 auto-rickshaws, and various business ventures.
Sources allege that Hossain's influence has grown under the current acting principal, Sheikh Mohammad Nahid Niaz, with whom he has a close relationship. He is accused of exploiting his connections with influential figures from the previous Awami League government, offering tours of Sylhet to officials from the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare, thereby solidifying his position.
"He has silently built a mountain of money," a source stated.
Hossain's wife, Fatema Akhter, also employed at the TTC as a workshop attendant, has reportedly been working at the institution for 20 years. When complaints were filed against Hossain, the acting principal allegedly intervened to protect him.
Allegations have surfaced that the acting principal has also interfered with transfer orders for other long-serving employees, including Shahin and computer training instructor Omar Farooq, reportedly using his connections to the previous government's expatriate minister, Shafiqur Rahman.
The TTC is reportedly rife with political affiliations, with some officials and employees allegedly supporting Jamaat and BNP, and having close ties to central leaders of these parties.
Hossain, along with two other employees, Shahin, are also accused of operating a CNG and land sales business, among other clandestine ventures. Concerns have been raised that investigations and complaints against them are being suppressed by the acting principal.
"As time goes by, a few officials and employees are becoming a mountain of money through corruption," a source claimed.
The allegations have raised concerns about transparency and accountability at the Sylhet TTC, and calls are growing for a thorough investigation.
