Khagrachhari, Sep 27 (V7N) – Seven platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in Khagrachhari to maintain law and order, following escalating protests over the gang rape of a Marma schoolgirl.
The district administration on Saturday afternoon imposed Section 144 in Khagrachhari Sadar and municipal areas, citing a deterioration of law and order and the risk to lives and property. The order took effect at 2 pm and will remain in force until further notice.
Earlier in the day, activists under the banner of Jumma Chhatra-Janta enforced a daylong blockade, demanding an end to violence against women in the hills and exemplary punishment for the accused. The blockade left about 2,000 tourists stranded in Sajek and another 1,000 in Khagrachhari, though the army has begun efforts to escort them back safely.
Protesters staged demonstrations by burning tires, felling trees, and blocking roads at key points, including Chengi Bridge, Chengi Square, and Mahajan Para. Transport was paralyzed as long-distance buses and internal routes were shut down, stranding passengers and disrupting travel from Dhaka and other regions.
The unrest stems from a gang rape case filed last Tuesday in Singinala area of Khagrachhari Sadar. Police have arrested one suspect, who has been placed on a six-day remand. Since then, demonstrations have intensified, beginning with a half-day blockade on Thursday and a mass rally on Friday.
The movement has gained wider support, with the UPDF-backed Pahari Chhatra Parishad, Hill Women’s Federation, and Democratic Youth Forum expressing solidarity with the protesters.
Authorities have tightened security, with additional police deployment across the district to prevent further escalation.
