Khagrachhari, Oct 01 (V7N) – Section 144 is still in effect in Khagrachhari Sadar, Municipality and Guimara Upazila, but the overall situation has begun to normalize following the suspension of the blockade. Shops have reopened, and public movement has visibly increased since Wednesday morning.
Compared to the last two days, both pedestrian and vehicular traffic have picked up. Some long-distance transport services have also resumed operations. However, law enforcement agencies continue to maintain a strict presence, with check posts and searches at key points across the district.
On Tuesday night, Jumma students and local groups announced on social media that the blockade would remain suspended until October 5.
Background of the Tension
Earlier, Khagrachhari Region Commander Brigadier General Hasan Mahmud alleged that there had been attempts to exploit the recent rape allegation to instigate unrest in the hill tracts.
During the clashes, the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) reportedly opened fire on both Bengali settlers and army personnel, an act described as “planned” by Guimara Region Commander Brigadier General Abul Kalam Rana.
Meanwhile, a medical report on the Marma girl, at the center of the allegations, revealed that no signs of rape were found on her body. However, according to the case statement filed by her father, the girl had been discovered unconscious in a nearby field.
Administrative Action
The Khagrachhari district administration has already formed a five-member committee to investigate the clashes and their aftermath.
