Gaibandha, Nov 09 (V7N) — Section 144 has been imposed in the Saghata-Phulchhari (Gaibandha-5) constituency following escalating tension between the supporters of BNP-nominated candidate Faruk Alam Sarkar and independent candidate Alhaj Nahiduzzaman Nishad over a planned motorcycle showdown.
The order was issued on Sunday (November 9) under emergency circumstances, confirmed Saghata Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mir Md. Al Kamah Tamal around 1 pm.
He said Section 144 would remain in effect from 6 am to 12 midnight on Sunday across Saghata Upazila and nearby areas, as there was a risk of clashes between the two sides.
According to locals, independent candidate Nahiduzzaman Nishad, who is also the expelled vice-president of Gaibandha BNP, had organized a motorcycle showdown in the afternoon. Supporters from different areas were reportedly heading to the event when BNP-nominated candidate Faruk Alam Sarkar’s followers allegedly stopped, beat, and vandalized motorcycles at several points, including Dakbangla and Hapania.
Supporters of Nishad claimed they were attacked while heading peacefully to the showdown as previously announced. At least 10 people were injured, and several motorcycles were damaged, they alleged.
Attempts to reach Faruk Alam Sarkar for comment were unsuccessful, and local BNP leaders declined to speak on the matter.
Following the incident, tension has gripped Saghata and its surrounding areas. Police have increased patrols in key locations, including Bonarpara Bazar, to prevent further unrest. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Saghata Police Station said law enforcement agencies are on high alert and maintaining intensified patrols to ensure law and order.
