Barguna, Nov 11 (V7N) — Fishermen in the Payra River of Barguna caught an 18-kilogram coral fish, which was later brought to Barguna fish market for sale. Coral fish from the Barguna rivers are highly valued across the country for their size and taste.
The fish was caught on Monday afternoon in a fishing net. Local fish trader Jafar Khola auctioned the fish at Barguna market, selling it for Tk 21,600.
Buyer Shah Alam said, “There is a high demand for coral fish, so I purchased it with the hope of selling it at a higher price later.”
Barguna District Fisheries Officer Md. Mohsin explained that during the recent 22-day fishing ban in the sea and rivers, fishermen were prohibited from using nets, which has allowed the fish population to increase in the rivers. He added that now the rivers are teeming with large fish species, including coral and pangas, which are highly sought after for consumption.
Officials said that the capture of such large fish reflects the recovering fish stock and is a positive sign for local fisheries, while also meeting the market demand for premium river fish.
