Barguna, Dec 30 (V7N) – Tension erupted at the Patherghata Upazila Parishad in Barguna on Monday afternoon as supporters of BNP candidate Nur Islam Monir blocked the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), accusing her of delaying the acceptance of nomination papers for the upcoming national parliamentary election.

According to reports, candidate Monir arrived at the UNO’s office around 2:30 pm to submit his nomination papers. During this time, UNO Israt Jahan reportedly spent more than half an hour in the restroom, causing a delay. Upon her return, she allegedly refused to accept the papers, claiming that more people than allowed had entered the office. Feeling humiliated, Monir left without submitting the papers.

Witnesses said that enraged BNP supporters then stormed the UNO’s office, surrounded her, and demanded her resignation, raising their voices in protest. Naval and police personnel intervened to calm the situation. Monir later returned at 4:45 pm and successfully submitted his nomination papers.

Monir accused the UNO of partisan behavior and demanded her removal. The UNO, Israt Jahan, stated that she was seated at her desk when Monir and over a hundred of his supporters entered the office premises. She claimed that she had asked for only a few people at a time in her office but Monir’s group delayed the process, creating disruption in government work. She also stated that she would take legal action over the alleged harassment.

The incident highlighted rising tensions among political supporters during the nomination submission process in Barguna ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
