Ukhiya, Sep 12 (V7N) - A peaceful protest and sit-in were organized in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, demanding a salary increase and the fulfillment of a 4-point demand for all host teachers working in the Rohingya camps. The event took place on Thursday, September 12, from 10 AM to 12:30 PM at Ukhiya’s Central Shaheed Minar. Host teachers from 32 Rohingya camps participated in the demonstration, holding posters and placards outlining their demands. Traffic on both sides of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf road was disrupted for about an hour.

The teachers expressed frustration over stagnant salaries despite long-term employment, pointing out that prices for essential goods have risen. They accused NGOs of unfair treatment, as salaries for Rohingya teachers are increased annually, while host teachers face frequent dismissals.

Their four key demands are:
  1. A minimum salary of 22,500 BDT.
  2. Paid maternity leave and benefits for female teachers.
  3. Abolition of the cluster system and prevention of unjust teacher layoffs.
  4. Yearly bonuses for both Eids.
The protest featured speeches from local figures, including Rajapalong Union Chairman candidate Sadman Jami Chowdhury, Borhan Uddin, Mohammad Shamim, Ismail, and Imtiaz.

Speakers emphasized the urgency of addressing these demands, warning of more extensive protests if they are not met. With the cost of living rising, they cautioned that stronger action might be necessary. Afterward, the teachers staged another sit-in in front of the Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer's (UNO) office. A delegation of host teachers from the 32 Rohingya camps met with UNO Tanvir Hossain, who listened to their concerns and assured them that the matter would be escalated to higher authorities.
