Jhalokathi, Oct 20 (V7N) – Students and local residents of Basunda College in Jhalokathi Sadar Upazila held a human chain and temporarily blocked the road on Sunday morning demanding the college be renamed “Jhalokathi City College,” “Jhalokathi Model College,” or “Jhalokathi Degree College.” The protest lasted several hours in front of the college campus and included former and current students as well as local community members.
The participants stated that a recent directive from the Secondary and Higher Education Division officially changed the college’s name to “Basunda College.” However, the institution had long been recognized as “Aklima Moazzem Hossain Degree College,” creating confusion among students, parents, and the public following the renaming.
Protesters emphasized that including “Jhalokathi” in the college’s name would enhance its prestige and recognition as one of the district’s oldest and most renowned educational institutions.
During the protest, students briefly blocked the Jhalokathi-Rajapur regional road to express their dissent. Rajapur Police and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) intervened to restore order. Subsequently, a student delegation submitted a written appeal to the Deputy Commissioner requesting the name change.
The protest highlights local demand for preserving the college’s historical identity while aligning its name with the district for wider recognition and credibility.
