MAR 8 (V7N) - The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Sunday conducted a special traffic enforcement drive across the capital, filing 810 cases against vehicles for violating traffic laws. The operation, carried out by all eight traffic divisions, targeted buses, trucks, covered vans, CNG-run auto‑rickshaws and motorcycles. According to DMP traffic sources, the highest number of cases was filed by the Uttara Division with 224 cases, followed by Wari with 145 and Gulshan with 97. During the day‑long operation, 348 vehicles were dumped and 158 were towed, as police intensified efforts to restore discipline on Dhaka’s congested roads. Officials said the special drive will continue in the coming days to ensure smoother traffic movement and enhance public safety.
The Ramna Division filed 67 cases, Lalbagh 63, Motijheel 57, Tejgaon 69 and Mirpur 88, reflecting widespread violations across the city. Police said the enforcement campaign focused on illegal parking, unfit vehicles, unauthorized movement of heavy transport and reckless driving. The DMP noted that traffic mismanagement remains a major challenge in Dhaka, and stricter enforcement is essential to reduce congestion and prevent accidents. Authorities also urged drivers and transport owners to comply with traffic rules to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads.
Alongside the enforcement drive, the DMP marked International Women’s Day by organizing a seminar at its headquarters, highlighting the importance of women’s rights, dignity and empowerment. This year’s national theme, “Today’s steps, tomorrow’s justice: protect the rights of women and girls,” underscored the long struggle for gender equality and the need to build a more just and secure society. Acting Commissioner Md. Sarwar extended greetings to women and said the performance of female police personnel is being strengthened through specialized training programmes aimed at enhancing their leadership and operational roles within the force.
Speaking at the seminar, Additional Commissioner SN Md. Nazrul Islam emphasized the indispensable role of women in society, noting that men and women complement each other in every sphere of life. He said women’s contributions are central to family, community and national development. The event was presided over by Joint Police Commissioner (Transport) Samsun Nahar, who highlighted the DMP’s commitment to promoting gender‑inclusive policing and creating a supportive environment for female officers.
Senior officials including Additional Police Commissioners Md. Masud Karim, Md. Shafiqul Islam, Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali, Md. Anisur Rahman and Md. Osman Gani attended the seminar, along with joint commissioners, deputy commissioners and officers of various ranks. The DMP said its dual focus on strict traffic enforcement and advancing women’s empowerment reflects the institution’s broader commitment to public safety, social responsibility and inclusive policing.
