Dhaka, Dec 28 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasised the necessity of early elections to restore democracy in Bangladesh, stating that reforms are an ongoing process and should not delay the electoral process. He made these remarks during a discussion meeting organised by JAGPA at the National Press Club on Saturday.

“Elections cannot be stopped for reforms. We cannot allow the country to be run by an unelected government day after day,” Fakhrul stated, underscoring the need for a democratic transition.

Criticising the Awami League, he said, “Those who tried to erase Zia’s name have erased the name of their leader. Fascism has been bid farewell, and it is time to build a new country.” Fakhrul accused the Awami League of systematically undermining democracy since its inception, citing the actions of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the alleged atrocities committed by the Rakshi Bahini.

He highlighted the BNP's history of advocating reforms, mentioning proposals from 2016, including measures to ensure fair prices for farmers. “Reforms are not a new idea. If anyone thinks their organisation brought them, they are wrong. We want early elections because an unelected government cannot run the country for long,” he added.

Fakhrul also extended his support for Dr. Yunus, urging the government to facilitate elections promptly. “We are saying again that Dr. Yunus’ government should be successful. If early elections are not arranged, it will create a crisis and threaten the sovereignty of the country,” he warned.

The BNP leader's comments come amid growing political tensions and debates over the need for electoral and governance reforms in Bangladesh.
