Dhaka, Jan 12 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has reiterated its demand for national elections to be held within this year, stating that an unelected government lacks legitimacy and importance to the people. This position was conveyed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir during a meeting with European Union (EU) Ambassador to Dhaka, Michael Miller, at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office on Sunday afternoon.

Following the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury addressed the media, emphasizing the urgency of a democratic election. "An unelected government has no weight and no acceptance," he stated. "We must move toward a democratic election without delay."

Chowdhury highlighted BNP's stance on political reforms, noting that issues with potential consensus should not be delayed. "For unresolved matters, political parties will take them to the people. Once a mandate is secured, these will be debated and passed in the next parliament," he explained.

The BNP delegation also discussed economic policies during the meeting, emphasizing their commitment to strengthening the economy if they come to power. Chowdhury noted that BNP would support any positive economic initiatives undertaken by the current government, underscoring a constructive approach to governance.

The EU's role in ensuring free and fair elections in Bangladesh was also a key focus of the discussions, reflecting BNP's efforts to garner international support for their demands.
