BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul, accompanied by his wife Rahat Ara Begum, departed from Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight around 8:30 am. His personal assistant, M Yunus Ali, informed UNB about the trip. Fakhrul is set to undergo treatment at a Singapore clinic for various health issues, including a neck blockage. The BNP leader is expected to return home on March 18.

Following his release from jail on February 15, Fakhrul sought medical attention at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital for various health problems. Under the supervision of Prof Shamsul Arfein from the hospital, he continued receiving treatments at home. BNP Vice Chairman Prof AZM Jahid Hossain revealed that Fakhrul had lost six kilograms of weight during his over three-month incarceration from October 29.

This is not the first time Fakhrul has sought medical treatment in Singapore. On August 24, 2023, the 77-year-old BNP secretary general went to Singapore for a medical checkup. His internal carotid artery problem was initially detected in 2015 during imprisonment in a political case. Since then, he has been visiting Singapore annually for follow-up treatment.

Mirza Fakhrul faced arrest from his Gulshan residence by members of the Detective Branch, a day after the police thwarted the party's scheduled grand rally on October 28 in the capital. After obtaining bail from the High Court, he was released from Dhaka Central Jail on February 15.
