Dhaka, July 31 (V7N) – Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been diagnosed with three heart blockages following an angiogram. Doctors have recommended bypass surgery, with a final decision expected on Thursday (July 31).

Nazrul Islam, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s personal secretary, confirmed the development. He said that the Jamaat chief is currently under hospital care based on medical advice.

Dr. Rahman first showed signs of illness on July 19 while delivering a speech at a party rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan. He collapsed on stage midway through his address, prompting fellow leaders to rush to his aid. Though he briefly resumed speaking from the dais, he later had to continue his remarks seated after falling a second time.

Following the incident, Dr. Rahman was admitted to a hospital in the capital. After initial treatment, he had returned home but was later readmitted for further medical evaluation, which led to the diagnosis of the heart blocks.

Party leaders and supporters have expressed concern for his health and are awaiting Thursday’s decision regarding the surgery.
