Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami Naib-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has said that the issue of proportional representation (PR) in the upper house is directly related to the referendum, and therefore, it must be resolved before the national election.

“The national election may be delayed for any reason, but the July Charter is an important document — it must be implemented first,” Dr. Taher told reporters after a meeting with a Commonwealth delegation led by Linford Andrews, Advisor to the organization’s Electoral Support branch and Head of Pre-Election Assessment, at the Jamaat central office on Tuesday (October 29).

He emphasized that the July Charter holds such national importance that a referendum must be held, even if it requires additional funds. “If the referendum is not held in November, all upcoming elections may come under pressure,” he warned.

Dr. Taher said the meeting discussed the implementation of the July Charter, the voting environment in the upcoming national elections, the government’s stance, and Jamaat’s role in ensuring fairness.

He further informed that Jamaat-e-Islami has already completed all necessary preparations to participate in a free and fair election.
