Dhaka, Nov 03 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Md. Taher has said that if other political parties respond to the chief advisor’s call regarding the implementation of the July Charter, Jamaat is also willing to sit for discussions.
He, however, questioned who would act as a referee if the advisory council refrains from taking action and leaves the responsibility entirely to political parties.
Dr. Taher made these remarks on Monday (November 3) afternoon at a joint press briefing in Dhaka, where eight like-minded parties—currently agitating with Jamaat for various demands including the introduction of a proportional representation (PR) system in the upper house of the National Parliament—held a joint media conference.
He stated that all eight parties, the people, and the government agree on the issue of introducing PR in the upper house, emphasizing that this demand will remain unfulfilled unless the July Charter is implemented.
Criticizing the BNP, Dr. Taher accused several of its leaders of spreading confusion by making contradictory statements. He also noted that if the referendum is held on the same day as the national election, the significance of the referendum will be diminished.
Dr. Taher further clarified that Jamaat is not forming any political alliance around the upcoming elections. He said the party plans to coordinate with others and field a single candidate to avoid vote division.
