Dhaka, Nov 05 (V7N) — Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad stated that while the referendum may or may not be held this month, it must take place before the national elections.
He made the remarks after meeting the Chief Election Commissioner on Wednesday afternoon. Azad warned that holding the referendum and elections on the same day could undermine its credibility, potentially discouraging political parties from implementing the July Charter. He emphasized the need for an urgent order to implement the July Charter.
On the topic of political alliances, Azad said eight parties have come together for election reforms and a better political environment, describing it as a simultaneous movement rather than a formal alliance. Discussions with both Islamic and patriotic parties are ongoing, with seat-sharing decisions to follow once election matters are finalized.
Regarding the Jatiya Party, he stated that no talks are underway, calling them allies of fascists and reiterating demands to ban their activities.
