Dhaka, Nov 25 (V7N) – BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been diagnosed with pneumonia and is under intensive observation at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Doctors have indicated that if complications persist, she may need to be transferred to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) or another intensive cardiac monitoring facility.
Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital late Sunday night following initial examinations. A member of her medical board reported that in addition to pneumonia, her multiple pre-existing health conditions have slightly worsened. Due to her age, simultaneous treatment for all conditions is challenging, and several tests have been conducted with mixed results. The board estimates she may need to remain hospitalized for about a week. She had been experiencing cold and cough symptoms even before attending an armed forces event on Friday.
Professor F. M. Siddiqui, a member of her medical board, said she has faced frequent illnesses in recent months. Her hospital admission became necessary due to concurrent complications affecting her heart and lungs. Khaleda Zia has a permanent pacemaker and previously underwent heart stenting, which complicates her respiratory issues.
She is being treated under the supervision of cardiologist Professor Shahabuddin Talukder in a hospital cabin. Her personal physician, Professor A. Z. M. Zahid Hossain, assured that she is receiving the highest level of care. He added that her family, including Tarique Rahman and his wife Zobaida Rahman, as well as relatives of the late Arafat Rahman Koko, are maintaining constant contact and support. Khaleda Zia has requested prayers from the nation for her recovery.
The 79-year-old leader has long suffered from arthritis, diabetes, kidney issues, lung problems, and eye conditions. She traveled to London on January 7 for advanced treatment and returned to Bangladesh on May 6 after 117 days.
