Dhaka, Nov 28 (V7N) – Speaking at a protest rally at Shaheed Minar on Friday, Nurul Haq Nur, president of the Gana-adhikar Parishad, stated that the future governance of Bangladesh should not be dominated by a single political party, but should involve all participants of the popular uprising. The rally was held to demand the release of Baul Abul Sorkar.
Nur described the July movement as a people’s movement driven by the need for democracy rather than a partisan political campaign. He criticized the Awami League, alleging that it has governed the country under undue influence from India over the past sixteen years, warning that the return of authoritarian forces could herald a “new era of oppression.” Nur emphasized that his organization would not compromise with fascist forces.
He also addressed leaders of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, urging restraint and caution. He reminded them of past incidents, saying that attempts to display power through attacks on processions or meetings would be counterproductive, citing the example of Sheikh Hasina fleeing by plane. Nur reiterated that BNP and Jamaat remain their political allies and that upcoming elections would be impossible without their participation.
The Gana-adhikar Parishad leader further criticized certain members of the Awami League for fleeing the country in the face of popular resistance, while clarifying that not all party members were involved in looting or attacking students during the July movement. Legal action had been taken against those responsible, and members who acted with ideological integrity could join other political parties if they wished, following careful assessment.
Nur concluded by highlighting the persistent role of money in Bangladesh’s electoral processes, noting that despite hopes following the popular uprising, such practices have continued unabated. He called for vigilance and participation from all segments of society to ensure fair democratic processes in the country’s future governance.
