Cox’s Bazar, Jan 10 (V7N) — A tragic accident occurred during illegal hill cutting in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, where a laborer lost his life after being buried under collapsing soil. The incident took place around 4:00 am on Friday in the Jummapara area of Jaliapalong Union.

The deceased was identified as Nurul Amin, (35) son of Mir Ahmed, a resident of Jummapara in Jaliapalong Union. According to local sources, the accident happened while Nurul Amin was working at a site where soil was being extracted from a hill.

Locals alleged that a man named Helal had been openly cutting hills in the area for a long time and selling the soil, despite the activity being illegal. During one such operation, a portion of the hill collapsed, trapping Nurul Amin under the soil.

With assistance from local residents, police recovered the body from the site. The body was later sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station, Nur Ahmed, confirmed the incident and said that legal procedures were underway following the recovery of the body. Further investigation is being conducted to determine responsibility for the illegal hill cutting and the fatal accident.

Illegal hill cutting has long been a concern in the Cox’s Bazar region, posing serious environmental risks and endangering the lives of workers and nearby residents.
