Madaripur, Jan 19 (V7N) — At least five people were killed and several others injured in a tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Barishal Highway in the Ghatakchar area of Madaripur Sadar upazila on Sunday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, a passenger bus traveling at high speed collided head-on with an easybike coming from the opposite direction. Following the impact, the bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch. Both the bus and the easybike were badly mangled in the collision.

The intensity of the crash claimed the lives of five people on the spot, while several passengers sustained injuries. Upon receiving the news, members of the fire service, police, and local residents rushed to the scene and began rescue operations.

The injured were rescued and taken to Madaripur Sadar Hospital for treatment. Hospital sources said the condition of several injured victims remains critical.

Vehicular movement on the affected stretch of the highway was suspended for some time following the accident, causing traffic congestion. Police later brought the situation under control and restored normal traffic flow.

Police said the exact cause of the accident is under investigation and that legal action will be taken in connection with the incident.

A series of fatal accidents on the Dhaka–Barishal Highway in recent times has raised serious concern among local residents, increasing fear and anxiety in the area.

Officer-in-Charge of Mustafapur Highway Police Station, Mamun Al Rashid, said he was heading to the accident site and that further details would be provided after an initial assessment.
