Netrokona, Dec 20, (V7N) - In the Mendi Pur Union of Khaliajuri Upazila, Netrokona, the Bishahari Haor is facing challenges in Boro rice cultivation due to inadequate irrigation. While the region transforms into a different landscape during the rainy season, the dry season witnesses intense agricultural activity. However, local farmers are struggling due to insufficient water supply for irrigation.
Farmers in the area have reported that to cultivate properly in the Haor, at least 8 cubic feet per second (cusec) of water is required, but only 2 cusec is being provided through the irrigation system. As a result, they are demanding an urgent supply of water through electric irrigation to ensure smooth farming activities.
Locals mentioned that several years ago, the late Khitish Chandra, a resident of the area, had submitted a request to the Khaliajuri Rural Electricity Office for a scheme to ensure adequate water supply to the Haor. However, when the authorities attempted to install a transformer for the scheme, the then vice-chairman of the Union Parishad, Dulal Chandra Sarker, who was a prominent leader of the ruling Awami League in Khaliajuri Upazila, reportedly used political influence to cancel the project. Locals allege that the decision to halt the scheme was politically motivated, thereby hindering the irrigation efforts at that time.
In response to the issue, the Assistant General Manager (AGM) of the Khaliajuri Upazila Rural Electricity office, speaking to Voice7 News on Friday night (December 20), stated, "I am new to this position and unaware of the previous developments. However, if the farmers require irrigation connections for their agricultural activities, we will arrange them upon request from the locals."
The ongoing irrigation shortage is affecting the farmers' ability to grow crops effectively in the Bishahari Haor, and they are hopeful that the relevant authorities will take action to resolve the issue swiftly.
