Dhaka, Dec 28 (V7N) — Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam stated that the police are striving to reduce crimes such as robbery and murder, emphasising that they cannot work miracles to eliminate crime nationwide. He also urged students to cooperate with law enforcement in their efforts.

The IGP made these remarks during the 41st Annual General Meeting of the Bangladesh Retired Police Officers Welfare Association, held at Rajarbagh in the capital on Saturday.

Regarding the recent fire at the Secretariat, Baharul Alam mentioned that an investigation is ongoing, and the committee assigned to the case will provide further details. He also assured the public that threats to coordinators are being taken seriously, although no significant findings have been uncovered yet.

At the same event, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali reflected on the public's perception of the police, acknowledging the challenges the force has faced since independence. He admitted that the police's role during the student movement of July-August had raised questions.

"The reason for people's anger towards the police needs to be analysed," Sajjat Ali said. He added that if the police had made better decisions even 72 hours before the events of August 5, many lives could have been saved.

The statements highlight the ongoing efforts and challenges faced by the police force in addressing crime and public trust in Bangladesh.
