Dhaka, Dec 31 (V7N) — The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will deploy an additional 3,000 police officers across the capital to ensure public safety during the 'Thirty-First' night celebrations and the New Year’s dawn. Mobile courts, led by magistrates from the Department of Environment, will also be on standby to monitor and address any incidents.
DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali shared these measures during a briefing at the DMP Media Center on Tuesday afternoon.
"Regular security arrangements in Dhaka include patrol teams from outposts and police stations. However, for the Thirty-First Night, we are deploying additional forces in key areas such as Dhaka University, Gulshan, Tinsho' Feet, and Uttara Diabari," Sajjat Ali stated.
To prevent unauthorized fireworks and noise pollution, the DMP has conducted raids over the past week, seizing 127 kg of fireworks, including firecrackers and cluster bombs. Five individuals have been arrested in connection with these activities.
The commissioner emphasized the role of citizens in curbing noise pollution: "The police and the Department of Environment alone cannot address this issue. We urge everyone’s cooperation to maintain order and peace."
Regarding celebrations of the English New Year in Bangladesh, Sajjat Ali noted that unlike other countries where events are held in designated areas, festivities in Dhaka often span the entire city. "We planned to organize a centralized event this year but could not. Hopefully, this will be possible next year," he added.
In response to questions about police morale, Sajjat Ali reassured the public: "The morale of our officers has significantly improved. We are now fully capable of handling any situation."
The DMP has identified strategic locations for increased security, ensuring the safety of Dhaka’s residents as they ring in the New Year.
