Dhaka, Nov 05 (V7N) – The Bangladesh government has decided to release 37 prisoners who have served 20 years or more of their life sentences, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The Home Ministry issued an official notification detailing the decision.
Authorities reviewed multiple factors, including the prisoners’ behavior in jail, the nature of their crimes, age, and the specifics of their cases before granting early release. Most of the beneficiaries were serving sentences for murder convictions.
According to the Home Ministry notification, the decision falls under Section 569 of the Prison Act, which allows the remission of remaining sentences for long-term convicts who have shown good conduct. Prison officials indicated that some of the 37 inmates had between six and ten years of their sentences remaining and will be released from various jails in the coming days.
Jannat-ul Farhad, Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Development), confirmed that the final list includes 37 names. Although initial proposals from district jails included both male and female inmates, no female prisoners were included in the final list.
Officials noted that earlier this year, other prisoners had also been released under the “Twenty Years Rule,” which has so far benefitted over a hundred inmates. The government emphasized that all releases will be executed immediately following the formal order.
