Dhaka, Feb 16 (V7N) — After nearly two decades, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to form the government, and public discussion is intensifying over the official residence of incoming Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Following the mass uprising of 2024, the former prime minister’s residence Gana Bhaban was transformed into the July Memorial Museum, leaving the country without a designated prime ministerial residence. This has prompted questions about where the new head of government will live and work.
Officials at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works say the state guest house Jamuna, currently used as the Chief Adviser’s residence, could be quickly prepared as the prime minister’s official residence if formal instructions are issued.
Public Works Department Chief Engineer Md. Khalequzzaman Chowdhury stated that Jamuna is secure and could be made ready promptly. At the same time, the ministry confirmed that plans are underway to construct a new, modern and permanent residence meeting international standards, with strong emphasis on security, administrative functionality and protocol requirements.
Officials described the prime minister’s residence as not merely a house but a national symbol reflecting Bangladesh’s heritage and dignity, adding that the design vision aims to match leading global standards.
Meanwhile, State Guest House Building No. 29, adjacent to Jamuna, has been prepared as the residence for the opposition leader — continuing a practice dating back to the 1990s.
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to take oath as prime minister on Tuesday following his party’s decisive victory in the 13th National Parliament elections. At present, he is residing in a rented house at No. 196 in Gulshan, and whether he will remain there temporarily or move to an official residence will depend on his decision after assuming office.
