Dhaka, Mar 09 (V7N) – Professor Sakhawat Ali Khan, one of the pioneers of journalism education in Bangladesh, has passed away at the age of 85. He breathed his last at a private hospital in the capital on Sunday night (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun).
Family members said he had suffered a stroke a few days earlier and was undergoing treatment at the hospital. After briefly returning home, he suddenly fell ill again on Sunday night and was rushed back to the hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.
He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, two grandchildren, and numerous students and admirers.
Academic and Professional Life
Prof. Sakhawat Ali Khan was born in 1941 in Shibpur Upazila of Narsingdi District. Before joining academia, he worked as a journalist in several national newspapers for nearly a decade.
He later joined the University of Dhaka, where he served for many years in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and retired in 2008. After retirement, he worked as a supernumerary professor in the same department for five years and continued as an honorary professor until his death.
He also served as a part-time adviser to the Department of Journalism at Daffodil International University and as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.
Contributions to Society and Research
Prof. Khan was the founding president of the Consumer Association of Bangladesh and chairman of the Society for Environment and Social Development.
His research primarily focused on the interaction between journalism and politics, and he published more than 30 research articles in national and international journals.
He also served as a member of the Board of Management of the Bangladesh Press Council and the Press Institute of Bangladesh.
