SANGSAD BHABAN, April 9, (V7N) – Treasury bench members in parliament today said the July mass uprising was the culmination of BNP’s 17-year struggle, describing the achievement as a victory for all.
Taking part in the discussion on the Thanks Giving Motion on the President’s speech, lawmakers noted that the movement was prepared through years of resistance against repression. “Although the July uprising was a movement by the students and the people, we prepared its ground for the last seventeen years,” said ruling party lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman (Mymensingh-7). He added that BNP’s ceaseless struggle led to victory in the 2024 July movement under the leadership of BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Members praised the President’s speech, which recognized Begum Khaleda Zia as the founder of parliamentary democracy. They highlighted Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s initiatives to bring revolutionary changes in health, education, sports, and manpower sectors, including public-private partnerships in healthcare and reforms in education.
Lawmakers also raised constituency-specific concerns, with Said Ahmed (Shariatpur-1) urging attention to long-neglected areas. They paid rich tribute to BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, three-time Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and the July uprising of 2024.
The first session of the 13th parliament began on March 12 with President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s address. The Business Advisory Committee fixed 50 hours for discussion, with Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam moving the motion of thanks, seconded by Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu.
