Bogra, Apr 19 (V7N) — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to visit his ancestral home in Bogra after nearly two decades, marking a significant political and personal milestone.

According to officials, the Prime Minister will arrive on Monday (April 20) and is expected to declare the historic municipality of Bogra as the country’s 13th city corporation during his visit.

Historic homecoming

The visit holds emotional significance for many locals, including 80-year-old Abdus Sattar, who has looked after the ancestral home of Ziaur Rahman for decades.

He recalled seeing Tarique Rahman in his youth alongside his father Ziaur Rahman and mother Khaleda Zia. Witnessing him return now as Prime Minister, he said, is a moment of great joy.

“This is a rare moment in my life—to see three members of the same family lead the country,” he said.

Public enthusiasm

The announcement of the Prime Minister’s visit has generated widespread excitement in Gabtoli and surrounding areas. Many residents described the occasion as comparable to Eid celebrations.

Locals expressed hope that the visit would bring long-awaited development to the region, which they say has lagged behind in recent years.

Key announcements and programs

During the one-day visit, the Prime Minister is expected to:

  • Declare Bogra Municipality as a city corporation

  • Inaugurate the Press Club and reconstruction of Baitur Rahman Central Mosque

  • Launch the e-bail bond (online bail submission) program in 15 districts

  • Attend a family card distribution event in Bagbari

  • Address a public rally at Altafunnesa Playground

Local lawmaker Rezaul Karim Badsha said the elevation of Bogra to a city corporation has been a long-standing demand and will mark a major step in the area’s development.

Return after 20 years

The last time Tarique Rahman visited his ancestral home in Bagbari, Gabtoli Upazila, was in 2006, when Khaleda Zia was serving as Prime Minister. His return after 20 years, now as head of government, adds further significance to the visit.

Officials say the visit will combine both administrative initiatives and public engagement, highlighting the government’s focus on regional development.
