Sylhet, May 02 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced a series of development initiatives aimed at improving water management, transport connectivity, healthcare, and youth development in the country.

He made the remarks at a gathering held at the Sylhet City Corporation premises on Saturday (May 2).

The Prime Minister said the government has launched a canal excavation programme to ensure better water management, reduce waterlogging during heavy rains, and preserve water for use in the dry season.

He also stated that the government is considering a double-line railway project on the Dhaka–Sylhet route. According to him, improving rail connectivity alongside road infrastructure will help reduce traffic congestion, lower transport costs, and prevent loss of agricultural land caused by excessive road expansion.

On the healthcare sector, the Prime Minister announced plans to open a 250-bed hospital at Sylhet Medical College soon, with future expansion to 1,200 beds. He also said the government plans to recruit around 100,000 health workers nationwide to strengthen medical services.

Highlighting youth development, he said the government will launch the “New Bud Sports” programme from Sylhet, with participation of around 130,000 children across the country. He expressed hope that future national athletes would emerge from this initiative.

Describing the pace of government work, he said: “Even a two-and-a-half-month-old baby cannot walk, yet we have begun implementing the promises made to the people within a short time. If we work sincerely, it is possible to build the country.”

He also urged the City Corporation to take initiatives to raise awareness among schoolchildren about proper waste disposal and maintaining cleanliness in public spaces.
