Nilphamari, May 20 (V7N) — Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita has said that the government is actively considering upgrading Syedpur Airport into an international airport as part of a phased national aviation development plan.

The minister made the remarks on Wednesday morning (May 20) after arriving at Syedpur Airport at around 9 am and speaking with journalists.

She said the government cannot implement all airport development projects at once, but will proceed gradually based on priority, public demand, and national interest.

According to her, airports that can best serve passenger convenience and economic activity will receive priority in the expansion plan. She noted that Syedpur Airport is especially important because it serves as a gateway to the northern region, which has growing industrial and trade activity.

“The decision will be taken considering where passenger service and national interest are best served,” she said, adding that upgrading Syedpur Airport to international standards is under serious consideration.

The minister also addressed questions regarding land acquisition for the airport expansion, saying the formal process is expected to begin after the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

After the briefing, she departed for Thakurgaon by road.
