Dhaka, Jul 09 (V7N)- Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury has said the government aims to send 10 million skilled workers abroad over the next five years as part of its strategy to expand overseas employment and strengthen the country's labour market.
Responding to a question from ruling party lawmaker Md. Zahidul Islam (Naogaon-5) in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday, the minister said the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment has prepared an action plan in line with the government's election manifesto to develop a skilled workforce for international labour markets.
He said the plan focuses on enhancing workers' professional skills, improving language proficiency and preserving and expanding overseas employment opportunities.
To support the initiative, the ministry is currently providing skills development training in 55 employment-oriented short- and long-term trade courses through 110 training institutions, including 104 Technical Training Centres (TTCs) and six Institutes of Marine Technology operating under the ministry.
The minister said the training programmes are designed to equip prospective migrant workers with the technical and language skills required to meet the demands of international employers.
Meanwhile, Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury also informed Parliament that the minimum wage for tea garden workers will be revised next month.
He said the government is committed to ensuring fair wages and protecting the legitimate rights and welfare of tea workers through the upcoming wage review.
