Dhaka, Jul 22 (V7N) – Bangladesh has called for stronger institutions, coordinated implementation and greater accountability to reduce road accident deaths and serious injuries worldwide during a high-level road safety discussion at the United Nations Headquarters.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam made the call while co-chairing the Multi-Stakeholder Panel on Road Safety at the UN Headquarters on Tuesday (July 21).
Addressing the panel, the minister said that establishing strong institutions alone is not enough, stressing that their effective implementation must be ensured at every level of the road transport system.
He emphasized that improving road safety requires the active participation of local governments, the private sector, civil society, academic institutions and young people.
However, he noted that such initiatives must be carried out under strong government leadership supported by effective coordination and a robust accountability framework.
Sheikh Rabiul Alam also stressed the need for close coordination among all relevant institutions, including the transport, health, police, finance, education, environment and local government sectors.
He said clear responsibilities and consistency between policy formulation and implementation are essential to achieving meaningful improvements in road safety and reducing traffic-related fatalities around the world.
