DHAKA, July 25 (V7N)— Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman stated on Saturday that there is no need to convene a special session of Parliament to elect a new President, as the election will take place during the next regular parliamentary session scheduled for September.
Speaking to reporters following a human rights consultation event at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital Dhaka, the Law Minister addressed queries regarding the presidential vacancy resulting from the resignation of President Md. Sahabuddin.
"According to Article 123 (2) of the Constitution, a new President must be elected within 90 days following a vacancy in the office," Asaduzzaman explained. "We have time until October 24. Therefore, no situation has arisen that warrants calling a special session. Since our next session is constitutional due within 60 days of July 15, we expect to resolve the presidential election during that upcoming session in September."
Former President Md. Sahabuddin, who assumed office as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, stepped down on Friday—nearly two years before the end of his five-year term—citing health complications.
Following his resignation, Parliamentary Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the responsibilities of Acting President in accordance with constitutional provisions until a successor takes office.
