Dhaka, August 6 — Md. Moinul Islam has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh. The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the appointment through an official notification issued on Tuesday. The order is effective immediately, indicating the government's prompt action in filling this crucial role.
Md. Moinul Islam, who previously served as the Commandant of Dhaka Traffic and Driving School, brings extensive experience to his new position. He joined the Bangladesh Police Force on January 20, 1991, through the 12th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) batch. Hailing from Panchagarh District's Sadar Police Station, Islam holds a BSc (Hons) and an MSc in Statistics.
The appointment follows the removal of Chowdhury Abdullah Mamun from the post of IGP. The Ministry of Public Administration issued a separate notification announcing the termination of Mamun's contract, citing Article-7 of the agreement between him and the government. Deputy Secretary Bhaskar Debnath Bappi signed the order on behalf of the President, specifying that the decision was made in the public interest and would take immediate effect.
This leadership change comes amid a critical period for Bangladesh, as the nation navigates political and social unrest following the recent resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The new IGP's appointment is expected to bring a fresh approach to the country's law enforcement challenges.
