Dhaka, May 15 (V7N) – For the second consecutive day, residents of Dhaka South, along with BNP leaders and activists, continued their sit-in protest at the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) premises, demanding that BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain be sworn in as mayor.

On Thursday, protesters occupied both the inside and outside of the main city hall gate, voicing frustration over the delay in Ishraq’s assumption of office. They complained of mounting difficulties in civic life and service disruption due to the mayor's post remaining vacant.

Protesters announced that their next sit-in would be held in front of the DSCC headquarters on Saturday from 10 AM, and they vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met.

Eyewitnesses reported that thousands of residents, along with BNP supporters, gathered at the location from early Thursday morning, chanting slogans and holding placards demanding Ishraq’s immediate appointment.

They alleged that civic services and development activities have come to a standstill in Dhaka South due to the lack of leadership. The protesters also accused the government of deliberately obstructing Ishraq’s swearing-in, despite the Election Commission not challenging the court’s verdict in his favor.

As the sit-in continued, all service activities of the Dhaka South City Corporation were suspended, creating significant disruption to daily administrative functions.

The political standoff comes at a time when citizens are already grappling with infrastructure and service delivery challenges, further intensifying the demand for a functioning and accountable city leadership.
