Dhaka, Nov 30 (V7N) – Tanvir Mahmud, the managing director of Hall-Mark Group and a convict serving a life sentence in a major loan fraud case, died on Saturday night while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was 55.

Assistant Inspector General of Prisons Jannatul Hossain Forhad confirmed the death, stating that Mahmud had been held at the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. He fell ill on Saturday afternoon, prompting prison authorities to transfer him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 1:30 pm. Despite receiving treatment, he died at approximately 10:30 pm.

Mahmud, originally from Brahmanbaria, was the son of Haji Kalu Mahmud. Before imprisonment, he lived at 205/4 Begum Rokeya Sarani in Dhaka’s Kafrul area. Doctors reported that he had been suffering from heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, conditions that complicated his health in recent months.

In 2024, a Dhaka court sentenced Mahmud, Hall-Mark Group chairperson Jesmin Islam, and seven others to life imprisonment over a massive loan fraud involving Sonali Bank. The court also imposed a fine of five crore taka on each of the convicts. The case stemmed from allegations that Mahmud and his associates embezzled large sums of money through fake entities and non-existent business operations.

Mahmud had been facing legal troubles since 2012, when the first loan fraud case was filed against him. In addition to the life sentence, he had 10 to 11 other cases pending trial, all related to allegations of obtaining loans under false pretenses and siphoning funds through shell companies.

His body has been kept at the hospital morgue, and legal procedures regarding the handover to his family are underway.
