Barguna, Sept 1 (V7N) – A Barguna district court has denied bail and ordered the imprisonment of seven Awami League leaders and activists in connection with a violent attack, vandalism, and arson incident targeting former BNP lawmaker and vice-chairman Alhaj Md. Nurul Islam Moni. The court order was issued Sunday morning by Judge Md. Saifur Rahman of the Barguna District and Sessions Court.

The accused individuals include residents of various villages in the Patharghata upazila of Barguna district: Md. Zakir Hossain Lavu (alias Lavu Miah), Golam Maola Milon, Marzan Abdullah Al Marzan, Jakaria Suman, Md. Nizam Uddin Talukder, Kibria, and Md. Khalil. The information was confirmed by Additional Public Prosecutor Md. Jasim Uddin.

According to case records, the incident dates back to September 4, 2022, when Nurul Islam Moni was traveling with a motorcade from Dhaka to Patharghata to attend a previously announced political meeting. At approximately 3:30 PM, as the convoy arrived at the C&B Bazaar area in Rayhanpur Union of Patharghata upazila, it came under sudden attack allegedly led by then-sitting MP of Barguna-2 constituency, Awami League's Shawkat Hasanur Rahman Rimon. The assault was reportedly carried out by 105 Awami League leaders and activists along with around 200 unidentified associates.

During the attack, Nurul Islam Moni sustained serious injuries, while several of his vehicles were vandalized and set on fire. A local BNP activist, Solaiman, later filed a formal complaint with the Patharghata Police Station on October 4, 2024, accusing 105 named Awami League members and several unknown individuals of orchestrating the violence.

The accused had previously secured eight weeks of anticipatory bail from the High Court on May 28, 2025. However, after the bail period expired, they appeared before the Barguna District Court to seek an extension, which was denied. The court instead ordered their immediate imprisonment.

Defense lawyer Md. Nasir Uddin Sohag stated that his clients intend to appeal to the High Court once again for bail.

This case remains a significant example of ongoing political tensions and alleged violence between rival party factions in the southern coastal region of Bangladesh.
