RANGAMATI, Sept 9 (V7N) – The court has issued arrest warrants against nine individuals, including a former member and executive engineer of the Rangamati Hill District Council, in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for alleged embezzlement of project funds. The order was issued on Monday afternoon by Senior District and Sessions Judge Md. Ahsan Tarek at the Rangamati District and Sessions Judge Court.

The accused include former council member Sabir Kumar Kumar, former executive engineers Kazi Abdus Samad and Biral Barua, assistant engineer Jyotirmoy Chakma, sub-assistant engineer Regan Chakma, Bhushanchhara Union Parishad chairman Md. Mamunur Rashid, contractor Ching Hen Rakhain, and employees Milan Talukdar and Amalendu Chakma.

ACC lawyer Advocate Jewel Dewan said that charge sheets in four separate cases were filed against the former council member, engineers, and contractors in court. The court accepted the charges and subsequently issued arrest warrants for each of the accused in all four cases.

According to the case filings, the Rangamati Hill District Council allocated funds for various development projects in Barkal upazila during the fiscal years 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20. However, the development work was not visibly executed. Allegations of irregularities and embezzlement in project implementation prompted the ACC’s Assistant Director Ahmed Farhad Hossain of the Rangamati Regional Office to file four separate cases on June 8, 2023.

The court’s issuance of arrest warrants comes two years after the filing of the cases, highlighting the ongoing legal process in investigating financial misconduct within local government development projects.
